Former Afghan general and politician is extradited to US to face drug charges
Prosecutors say Abdul Zahir Qadeer negotiated to sell 500 to 600 kilograms of heroin and methamphetamine and hundreds of weapons to a DEA source.
- On Friday, former Afghan general Abdul Zahir Qadeer appeared in Manhattan federal court following his extradition from Kenya to face conspiracy charges for illegally importing narcotics and weapons into the United States.
- Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated Qadeer was "purporting to be a political leader in Afghanistan" while allegedly operating a criminal enterprise dealing in dangerous narcotics and heavy weapons.
- Qadeer allegedly negotiated to sell "hundreds of kilograms" of heroin and methamphetamine along with machine guns and grenades, after delivering a two-kilogram "test shipment" for $14,000 to a Drug Enforcement Administration informant.
- Authorities detained Qadeer pending trial in the Southern District of New York, where he faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years for drug charges and 30 years for weapons offenses.
- This case follows the recent indictment of an Iraqi national accused of plotting terror attacks, as federal prosecutors continue targeting international threats operating within the Southern District.
