Ford recalls over 412K SUVs over possible steering loss
The recall affects 412,000 2017-2019 Ford Explorers due to a faulty suspension part that may cause sudden steering loss, with dealers providing free repairs, Ford said.
- On Friday, Ford Motor Company recalled more than 412,000 2017–2019 Explorer SUVs with rear toe link parts that may fracture, risking steering loss.
- After NHTSA contacted Ford on January 13, 2026, following five Vehicle Owner Questionnaires, Ford's Field Review Committee approved a field action earlier this month for the SAF-manufactured cross-axis ball joint.
- As of Feb. 20, Ford was aware of 26 reports of rear toe link fracture, two accidents globally, and said it is not aware of injuries.
- Notification letters are expected to be mailed March 9–13, and vehicle owners can check VINs on the NHTSA website beginning February 25 under recall number 26S08.
- Ford estimates only about 1% of selected models are affected, vehicles not manufactured in VIN order complicate lookup, and this campaign expands prior NHTSA recall 21V537 after 103 safety recalls in 2025.
