Seven Dead After Ferry Carrying over 260 Passengers Capsizes Off Northern Cyprus
Authorities said 17 people were missing as rescue crews searched the overturned ferry and detained the captain and seven crew members for questioning.
- On Sunday, the passenger ferry FILOJET capsized off the coast of Kyrenia, North Cyprus, leaving at least eight people dead and 17 missing. The vessel was carrying around 270 passengers and crew when it began taking on water.
- Departing Kyrenia for Tasucu, Turkey, at 12:30 p.m., the ship immediately encountered difficulties. Although North Cyprus experienced fierce storms on Saturday, Turkish Cypriot Interior Ministry officials noted the weather on Sunday was considered suitable for travel.
- Survivors reported the ferry moving erratically before the front left side burst open, causing it to sink to a depth of 514 metres. The vessel had been violently lifting out of the water before crashing down.
- Turkish Cypriot authorities detained the captain and seven crew members for questioning as rescue teams, including Turkish divers, searched the area. The government of Cyprus offered assistance following the tragedy.
- President Tayyip Erdogan extended condolences, while Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman expressed deep sadness. North Cyprus remains a breakaway state recognized only by Turkey, which supports the region militarily and economically.
