Flydubai Pilot Planned 9/11-Inspired Suicide Attack on Tel Aviv Airport, UAE Says
The suspect allegedly used an emergency axe to seize the cockpit, but passengers and crew restrained him before the plane landed in Saudi Arabia.
- On September 30, a pilot attempted to crash Flydubai Flight FZ1073 into Ben Gurion Airport, according to United Arab Emirates Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi. The aircraft carried 170 passengers and crew during the scheduled flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
- Investigations concluded the suspect 'drew inspiration' from the 9/11 attacks, Shamsi reported. He was influenced by a strain of Islamic fundamentalism and consumed material promoting terrorism while receiving boxing training.
- During the flight, the suspect attacked pilot Smit Machchhar with an emergency axe after allegedly using two previous Tel Aviv flights 'to familiarize himself with the flight route and the airport.'
- Passengers and crew 'immediately intervened with the assistance of a cabin crew member' to restrain the assailant. The aircraft landed at Saudi Arabia's Tabuk Airport where authorities arrested him.
- Shamsi concluded the suspect 'showed that he had met the professional and security requirements for employment' at Flydubai. While the suspect claimed he acted alone, investigations into potential associates linked to the Muslim Brotherhood continue.
