Fluffle of baby bunnies rescued from euthanasia on Vancouver Island
Harbour Air donated the flight that moved six newborn rabbits and Oatmeal to foster care after Rabbitats said they faced euthanasia.
- On Thursday, August 27, Harbour Air airlifted seven baby bunnies from Nanaimo to Surrey, rescuing them from euthanasia after a Parksville clinic contacted Rabbitats Rescue Society for help.
- Sorelle Saidman, Rabbitats executive director, explained the clinic offered a choice: take Oatmeal or the six other babies. Rabbitats opted for the six, as they needed specialized bottle-feeding care unavailable on the Island.
- Six baby bunnies are now nestled safely in Surrey, being bottle-fed by a seasoned volunteer alongside six other rabbits. The rescue involved veterinarians, volunteers, and a sea plane flight by HarbourAirLtd.
- Rabbitats limits its intake because "of a chronic lack of resources and the huge demand given all the rabbits in need," Saidman said. The organization prioritizes cases where animals would not survive without intervention.
- To address the boom of feral domestic pet rabbits, Saidman advocates for on-the-ground collection and spaying. "One of the main points that I keep trying to press upon is that you have to get the first two," she said.
