Nearly 6,000 students infected and about 100 influenza clusters reported nationwide as schools close to limit virus spread before critical exams, officials said.
- On Monday , Education Ministry Director-General Mohd Azam Ahmad ordered several schools closed on district health advice, keeping around 6,000 pupils at home before 400,000 students sit the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exam on Nov 3.
- Last Thursday, the health ministry reported 97 influenza clusters during Epidemiological Week 40/2025, most in educational institutions, up from 14 the week before.
- Schools were instructed to implement preventive controls including face masks and reduced large-group activities, Mohd Azam Ahmad said, `We already have extensive experience in dealing with infectious diseases from the COVID-19 pandemic`.
- Thousands of pupils will stay home for up to a week, and the ministry did not specify when it will review the closures, according to Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad.
- The geographic distribution shows all states recorded increases, highest in Selangor , with public health expert Sharifa Ezat Wan Puteh urging special attention to children and annual influenza vaccination.
