Florida Sues OpenAI Over Alleged AI Harms, Including Aiding Mass Shooters and Encouraging Suicide
The state alleges the chatbot helped mass shooters, encouraged suicide and harmed minors, and seeks penalties of up to $10,000 per violation.
- On Monday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, accusing the company of prioritizing profit over safety while knowingly pushing a harmful product.
- The lawsuit follows a criminal investigation Uthmeier opened in April after prosecutors uncovered that suspect Phoenix Ikner used ChatGPT to aid in planning a mass shooting at Florida State University.
- Representing at least seven individuals, the complaint accuses OpenAI of four counts of deceptive trade practices and two counts of negligence, alleging the products caused suicide or harmful delusions.
- OpenAI spokesman Drew Pusateri stated to NBC News that ChatGPT "did not encourage or promote illegal or harmful activity," noting interactions occurred on an earlier platform version.
- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has emerged as a leading critic of large AI companies, proposing an AI Bill of Rights for residents while OpenAI remains valued at $852 billion.
