Florida mom warns of AI-powered FaceTime prank that cloned her daughter's image and voice
Police say generative AI tools are making voice and image spoofing easier, and the viral warning has drawn nearly 20 million views on TikTok.
Erika Anderson, a Jacksonville resident, received a distressing FaceTime call last month that appeared to come from her daughter, but the AI-powered spoof cloned her daughter's voice and image to trick her.
Increasingly accessible generative AI tools have caused a surge in AI-facilitated scams, prompting The Jacksonville Sheriff to assign detectives in its Economic Crimes Unit to investigate such cases.
After Anderson posted her story on TikTok, it racked up nearly 20 million views, with thousands reporting similar AI-powered pranks. She chose not to press charges but added 2 more cameras and established family code words.
Officials and The FBI urge the public to verify caller identity even when voices appear genuine, recommending people hang up to independently call back on a known number.
On Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned that AI-generated content blurs the line between real and fake, stating, "It's hard to tell the difference, and they can do it in ways that that could potentially be harmful to you.
