Men Arrested After Dogs, Pigeons Found Suffering in Sweltering U-Haul
Deputies said the animals were in danger at 102 degrees, and all four were taken for emergency treatment after a passerby reported the truck.
- On Thursday, Flagler County deputies arrested Angel Valdes, 70, and his son Roy Valdes Hernandez, 35, after finding two dogs and two pigeons suffering in the metal cargo area of a U-Haul as temperatures reached 102 degrees.
- The family, moving from Miami to Savannah, Georgia, claimed their SUV was too crowded, so they placed the animals in the truck; deputies noted there was ample room within the vehicle to store the dogs.
- Inside the cargo area, authorities found a 70-pound pit bull mix struggling to stand and an 80-pound English bulldog unable to stand, both panting heavily and lying in urine. Two pigeons were trapped in a sealed storage box with no air holes.
- Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly condemned the actions, stating: "If you wouldn't ride in a metal box in 102-degree heat with no air, don't force an animal to do it." He urged the public not to leave animals unattended in vehicles.
- Both men were released on $500 bond following their arrest. The sheriff's office forwarded information on two other adults present during the move to the state attorney's office for further review.
