Teen Found Inside Clothes Dryer Leads to Kidnapping Arrest in Florida

Detectives say Christopher Michael Veit hid the girl in a dryer and found counterfeit currency, while the U.S. Secret Service was notified.

  • On Sunday, Monroe County Sheriff deputies arrested Christopher Michael Veit, 53, at his Key Largo home after discovering a teenage girl hidden inside a clothes dryer.
  • Authorities responded to a residence on Miramar Drive around 11:45 a.m. Sunday after the victim called 911 "to report she was being held hostage." Investigators determined Veit restrained the teen and took her cellphone when she attempted to leave.
  • Deputies charged Veit with kidnapping, false imprisonment, interference with child custody, and unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Detectives also discovered "several sheets of counterfeit currency" and notified the Secret Service.
  • The victim received evaluation at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier before returning to family custody; records show Veit remains held in the MCSO Key West jail facility without bond.
  • According to MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt, the investigation remains ongoing with further charges potentially pending, and Veit's arraignment is scheduled for August 4.
