Florida Reveals Redesigned Driver Licenses Highlighting State History
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles begins issuing redesigned driver licenses and identification cards. Governor Ron DeSantis announced the rollout Tuesday during a Florida Cabinet meeting at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee.
Reflecting state history, the new credentials feature the Castillo de San Marcos fortress on the front and Space Shuttle Discovery on the back, alongside the motto "Let Us Alone" from Florida's first unofficial state flag.
FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner stated "Florida continues to set the standard for secure credentialing," noting the redesign strengthens identity verification and maintains REAL ID compliance while addressing emerging fraud trends.
Residents are not required to replace current credentials immediately, as existing cards remain valid until their expiration date; the agency will phase out older versions over time with online ordering opening by November.
Commercial driver licenses and commercial learner's permits now include a "Temporary Non-Domiciled" marking, joining the standard licenses available at service centers statewide beginning tomorrow.
