Florida House Speaker Forms Redistricting Committee
FLORIDA, AUG 7 – The committee will address a Florida Supreme Court ruling that found racial considerations in the current map violated the Equal Protection Clause, prompting changes before 2026.
- Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez announced the formation of a `Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting`, with appointments in September during the 2026 Legislative Session, to review redistricting following recent court rulings.
- Amid the Supreme Court’s July ruling, the Florida Supreme Court said the Fair Districts amendment inadvertently created a race-based district, prompting legislative review, Perez said.
- In the last redistricting cycle, Republicans gained three or five U.S. House seats in Florida, creating a 20-8 majority amid legislative friction.
- House members must inform the Speaker’s office by Aug. 15 to join the `Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting`.
- Ahead of the 2026 Midterms, the Florida Constitution requires the Legislature to redraw lines following the decennial census, but completion before the election is unlikely.
