Byron Donalds, David Jolly Outline Differences on Property Taxes, Insurance at Fort Lauderdale Summit
The nominees clashed over a state-backed hurricane insurance fund and a property tax ballot measure, with each warning the other’s plan could raise costs.
On Wednesday, Democratic gubernatorial nominee David Jolly and Republican Byron Donalds appeared separately at the Sunshine Economy Summit in Fort Lauderdale to outline sharply different economic visions for Florida.
The candidates presented contrasting approaches to property taxes and insurance, with Jolly proposing a state-backed windstorm fund while Donalds favors maintaining reforms passed under Governor Ron DeSantis.
Amendment 3, which would increase homestead exemptions to $250,000, divided the candidates: Donalds plans to vote in favor, while Jolly opposes the measure but said he would respect voters' decision.
Efforts to arrange a debate collapsed, marking the first gubernatorial election in 50 years without one, as both candidates accused the other of misrepresenting their platforms in campaign ads.
Both nominees continue campaigning for the November 3 general election as Florida voters face choices on insurance affordability, property taxes, and data center regulation.
