Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Calls on House to Impeach Judge Who Released Man Accused of Killing 5-Year-Old
- On Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 445, known as Missy's Law, in Tampa, requiring defendants convicted of dangerous crimes to be remanded to custody without bond pending sentencing.
- The legislation is named for 5-year-old Missy Mogle, murdered last year by her stepfather, Daniel Spencer, after Circuit Judge Tiffany Baker released him on bond while awaiting sentencing for a prior child sex crime conviction.
- Calling the murder a "dereliction of judicial duty," DeSantis urged the Florida House of Representatives to impeach Baker, stating, "Until you start holding these judges accountable, they are going to continue to find ways to benefit the criminal element."
- DeSantis also signed House Bill 1159, establishing mandatory prison terms for offenders 18 or older and creating a "life felony" for aggravated exploitation of children under 12, while criminalizing AI-generated sexual abuse material.
- Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier noted the state has recorded more than 1,400 child predator arrests since he took office, warning offenders, "Stay away from our kids" as enforcement efforts intensify.
