Florence Pugh stars in 'East of Eden' adaption on Netflix
- On Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, Netflix hosted the 'East of Eden' premiere at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, featuring Florence Pugh in the titular role of Cathy Ames.
- The series offers a fresh interpretation of John Steinbeck's 1952 novel, set in California's Salinas Valley between the American Civil War and World War I.
- Co-Showrunner and writer Zoe Kazan guided the production, while Pugh aimed to understand the character by believing her experiences rather than portraying a simplistic villain.
- Cast members praised the production; Martha Plimpton called Pugh 'honestly delightful' and noted her warmth on set while navigating the story's dark themes.
- This adaptation follows the 1955 film version directed by Kazan's grandfather, which starred James Dean in his first major leading role.
