This summer, 27 churches were desecrated in the Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Consecrated cibories and hosties were stolen, causing the Catholic Church to fear their use during black Masses or satanic rituals.
Three persons, suspected of several thefts of religious objects in the south-west, were arrested and held in pre-trial detention, announced on Thursday, 4 September, the Dax Public Prosecutor ' s Office. Since May, 27 thefts have been recorded in the region.
Three individuals will be tried on 27 October 2025 in the Dax Correctional Court for a series of robberies in churches in the Landes and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. They are being held in pre-trial detention and are being prosecuted for 28 aggravated thefts.
