Little League in Minnesota Retires Jersey Number for 8-Year-Old Killed in Catholic School Shooting
The tribute honored the 8-year-old’s kindness and sportsmanship, and his number will no longer be worn in the league.
On Wednesday, the Richfield Little League retired 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel's No. 7 jersey in an emotional ceremony honoring his life and spirit. The tribute celebrated the young player's passion for baseball and his deep connection to the community.
Eight months after Fletcher and Harper Moyski were killed in the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School, parents Mollie Merkel and Jesse Merkel gathered with teammates and friends to celebrate their son's legacy. The community came together to remember his energy and joy.
Coach Mike Keeegan said, "Retiring a number is very much a symbol, but it's also a reminder." Teammates shared memories of Fletcher's inclusivity and humor, while his siblings threw out the ceremonial first pitch, marking a special moment for the family.
"We're happy that his name continues to be out there and his life is celebrated," Mollie Merkel said. She and Jesse Merkel described Fletcher as the child who always made sure everyone felt included and had fun playing.
League commissioner Christine Swan told the crowd, "We come together to remember, to honor and to carry him with us." The No. 7 jersey will no longer be worn by any player, ensuring Fletcher's legacy endures in the community.
