Storms drop dangerous, flooding rain from DC to New York, inundating roads and snarling air travel
NORTHEAST UNITED STATES, JUL 31 – Heavy rainfall fueled by Gulf moisture surge threatens flash flooding for 23 million people along the Northeast I-95 corridor, with some areas expecting up to 8 inches of rain, NOAA said.
- The Northeast is on high alert for significant flash flooding, with AccuWeather forecasting 2-4 inches of rain and localized amounts possibly reaching up to 8 inches, particularly in northeastern Pennsylvania.
- Flash flood watches and warnings have been issued for 23 million people in areas including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia, according to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, which has indicated a level 3 out of 4 flood risk.
- AccuWeather meteorologists warned that heavy rainfall can lead to flash flooding in minutes, especially in areas with hilly terrain and flood-prone spots.
- Heavy rain is expected to affect the Interstate 95 corridor at the end of the week, including all of Connecticut and New Jersey.
