Flanagan, Craig clash over outside spending in DFL US Senate primary
Flanagan says super PACs and dark money groups have spent more than $12 million to sway the Democratic Senate primary.
On Wednesday, Governor Peggy Flanagan held a press conference criticizing Congresswoman Angie Craig regarding a "flood" of outside spending. Flanagan claimed five super PACs and dark money groups have spent more than $12 million to sway Minnesota's primary election.
With five weeks until the Aug. 11 primary, campaign finance reports reveal a significant cash disparity. Craig reported nearly $5 million on hand July 7, while DFL-endorsed Flanagan reported $1.1 million in her last March filing.
Craig rejected the assertions as "hypocrisy," citing donations to The Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association during Flanagan's tenure. Craig pointed specifically to a CoreCivic contribution, a company partnering with the federal government on ICE detention facilities.
Flanagan said she requested the CoreCivic donation be donated during her DLGA tenure, arguing Craig's comparison is not "apples to apples." She maintains corporate PACs exist solely to elect candidates who "do their bidding."
Similar cash disparities exist in the GOP primary, where reports through March show Michele Tafoya with $1.9 million cash on hand compared to $223,000 for Adam Schwarze. The Aug. 11 primary will decide final tickets for both parties.
