DeWine Orders Flags to Half-Staff for Slain Rittman Police Sergeant
Flags will stay at half-staff until Ries is laid to rest after the 10-year veteran was killed responding to a break-in and shots-fired call.
On Sunday, July 5, 2026, Rittman Police Sgt. Scott Ries was killed in the line of duty while responding to a 911 call reporting a break-in and gunfire on Chippewa Trail.
Rittman Mayor Rudy Arnold ordered flags lowered Monday to honor Ries, with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine extending the order for state buildings until sunset on the day of the funeral.
Authorities reported that four people, including Ries, died during the incident, while four Medina County sheriff's deputies and a K-9 sustained injuries; the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is probing the scene.
Hundreds of officers from across Northeast Ohio escorted the ambulance in tribute, while community members created a makeshift memorial for the officer described by colleagues as a "very sweet soul."
Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio President Jay McDonald stated that targeted violence against officers "must end," urging Ohioans to support law enforcement following the recent rise in ambushes.
