Trucks Crash, Explode on Major Highway
Seven trucks were involved and five caught fire, with three drivers seriously injured and an 80-minute detour in place, officials said.
- On Tuesday, June 30, a seven-truck collision on the Hume Motorway near Breadalbane and Gunning closed the highway in both directions just after 5:00 am. Five of the heavy vehicles caught fire, prompting a major emergency response.
- Explosions from trucks carrying eight tonnes of butane cans, resin, and foam fueled the intensity of the blaze, necessitating a 300-metre exclusion zone. "Due to the intensity of the five trucks involved all alight, and flammable contents within the vehicles, a 300-metre exclusion zone has been put in place," the NSW RFS said.
- Almost 70 firefighters, including 44 from Fire and Rescue, are battling the blaze with bulk water tankers and hazardous materials crews. "Fire and Rescue are doing the firefighting and we're assisting with breathing apparatus," NSW RFS Southern Tablelands Inspector George Shepherd said.
- Traffic is diverted through the Federal Highway and Barton Highway via Canberra, adding approximately 80 minutes of travel time for motorists. Paramedics treated six truck drivers for minor injuries, with two taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
- NSW Police are investigating the scene as crews conduct clean-up operations, with the highway expected to remain closed for several hours. Ongoing salvage and hazardous material mitigation will be protracted, Shepherd expected.
