BC Summer Games Kicks Off in Kelowna
Youth athletes from across British Columbia are competing in 19 sports, while wildfire smoke postponed three events.
- The 2026 Summer Games officially began in Kelowna on Thursday, bringing over 3,000 athletes, coaches, and officials to compete through July 26 across 19 sport categories.
- Kayakers took to the Parkinson Recreation Centre for a Kayak Polo tournament, while artistic swimming competitions were held at H20 Adventure to launch the day's events.
- Later, basketball teams competed at Okanagan Mission Secondary, where players from the Thompson-Okanagan Team showcased shooting and layup skills during the tournament.
- Wildfire smoke forced organizers to postpone Ultimate, towed water sports, and sailing competitions, disrupting portions of the scheduled programming.
- Kelowna is hosting the Summer Games for the first time since 2008, marking a significant return of the multi-sport event to the community.
