Five security personnel killed in attack in Thailand's south
Authorities said about 10 attackers used gunfire and pipe bombs, killing five rangers and injuring six civilians in a raid that also stole weapons.
- On Wednesday evening, about 10 attackers killed five Thai soldiers and wounded six civilians at the Buketa Sami checkpoint in Narathiwat province using gunfire and pipe bombs.
- Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala provinces are predominantly Muslim and have faced an armed separatist conflict since 2004, killing more than 7,000 people in the predominantly Buddhist nation.
- The attackers, seen in photos riding a black pickup truck, stole three AK-47 assault rifles, three bullet-proof vests, and three mobile phones from Task Force Ranger Regiment 45 members.
- Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul condemned the assault as a "terrorist attack that clearly aimed at killing government officials, and a serious threat to national security," while authorities continue searching for perpetrators.
- Following a Tuesday car bomb explosion at the former Khao Tanyong police station, this assault ranks as one of the deadliest against Thai security forces in recent years, intensifying regional concerns.

Five security personnel killed in south Thailand
