Five People Charged with Murder in Northwestern Ontario
Police say two youths are among five suspects charged after a 33-year-old man died from injuries in the assault.
- On Wednesday, Ontario Provincial Police announced charges against five residents of Eabametoong First Nation following a homicide investigation, with suspects facing second-degree murder and aggravated assault charges after a 33-year-old man died in hospital Tuesday.
- Nishnawbe Aski Police Service officers responded to a reported assault on Albany River Crescent last Sunday, discovering two people with life-threatening injuries who were airlifted for treatment.
- Police identified three accused as Edgar Moonias, 47, Trayvon Wabano, 18, and Samson Wabano, 19; two other suspects, aged 15 and 17, are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
- Moonias is scheduled for a bail hearing in Thunder Bay on Thursday, while the other four accused individuals, remanded into custody, are expected to appear in court in the city on April 14.
- Eabametoong First Nation, a fly-in community over 300 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, is grappling with the incident; Chief and Council shared a message from Alvin Fiddler invoking the Creator amid community 'pain.

Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) officers responded to reports of an assault on Sunday in the remote northwestern Ontario community.
