Great White Shark Spotted by Fishermen Off New Hampshire Coast
The fishermen estimated the shark at 15 feet long as experts said the sighting reflects recovering shark populations in New England waters.
On Saturday, fishermen Tyler Scordo and Caysen Allard spotted a great white shark feeding on a whale carcass about two miles off the coast of Portsmouth.
Scordo and Allard initially mistook the carcass for an overturned boat before noticing a deep cut; they observed the 15-foot predator swimming alongside the whale, prompting them to back away.
Shark season in this region runs from July through November, according to experts at the Seacoast Science Center. Seeing predators in New England waters is not uncommon as they travel searching for food.
Conservation efforts are working, according to the Center, as this sighting follows several recent reports off the coast of Maine.
Reflecting on the encounter, Allard said, "It's not an everyday thing" to witness such a close-up display of the predator's power and size.
