First Great British Railway Branded Train Unveiled in Brighton
The rollout follows GTR’s public ownership and will put more than 11,000 services under the GBR banner each weekday, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander unveiled the first Great British Railways-branded train in Brighton, a Southern Class 387 featuring red, white, and blue livery mirroring the Union flag.
- Govia Thameslink Railway prepares to transition to public ownership on May 31, following long-awaited legislation included in last week's King's Speech to consolidate Britain's rail network under single public management.
- Alexander stated the launch "makes the future of Britain's railways a reality." The Department described the branding as a "fresh, unmistakably British design" incorporating the double-arrow logo originally used by British Rail.
- Once GTR integrates into public ownership, more than 11,000 publicly owned services will run each weekday. The DfT confirmed branding will roll out gradually across stations, trains, and staff uniforms to ensure value for taxpayers' money.
- The public ownership program is expected to complete by the end of next year, consolidating the entire network. This reform also introduced the first freeze in rail fares in 30 years, delivering long-term passenger benefits.
