First robotic-assisted surgery a success at Surrey Memorial Hospital

The program will expand to thoracic and ear, nose and throat surgeries as Fraser Health says the robot improves recovery and keeps care local.

  • On June 23, surgical teams at Surrey Memorial Hospital performed the facility's first robotic procedure using the Vinci system, successfully removing a lung tumor from a 55-year-old patient.
  • The Surrey Hospitals Foundation raised $4.5 million to bring this technology to one of the province's busiest surgical centers, where surgeons performed nearly 19,000 surgeries last year, approximately 10 per cent of which were cancer-related.
  • Ahmad Ashrafi, Fraser Health's regional division head and chief of thoracic surgery, noted the system allows surgeons to operate with "delicate precision and optimal visualization," using smaller incisions to reduce patient pain and scarring.
  • Residents requiring thoracic or ENT surgeries can now receive care locally rather than being referred out of Fraser Health, reducing stress for families and improving patient outcomes.
  • A second Vinci robot will begin operating this fall at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster; Urology procedures will be based at Royal Columbian, while Surrey Memorial remains the center for its existing specialty surgeries.
