Airborne, 219 tons of microplastics arrive each year in Swiss soil and waters, according to a study by Empa, Eawag and Agroscope. About 40% of these particles end up on agricultural land, in lakes and rivers.
Empa researchers, together with Eawag and Agroscope, have for the first time systematically investigated how much microplastics can be found in Swiss soils and waters. The result: around 219 tonnes per year.
