First Nations haven’t been consulted on clean drinking water legislation: lawyer
Lawyer Michael Rosenberg says 260 First Nations have not seen a draft of the promised bill, and 40 long-term water advisories remain in place.
First Nations lawyer Michael Rosenberg says his clients have not been consulted on promised clean drinking water legislation, despite a 2021 settlement requiring Ottawa to work with them on development.
The federal government failed to meet a previous fall deadline for the bill, leaving communities without governed water on-reserve and exposed to potential system failures.
"They really have no choice, given the lack of engagement by the federal government," Rosenberg said, noting his clients will return to court if legislation fails to meet settlement standards.
Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty insists the bill is a "top priority," with the government maintaining it still intends to introduce legislation before the House of Commons rises for the summer.
Conservative MP Billy Morin criticized the government for a "top-down approach," while pressure grows to affirm clean water as a fundamental human right for First Nations.
