First tablet version of weight-loss jabs to be available in UK in weeks
The daily semaglutide tablet gives adults with obesity or related conditions a private alternative to weekly injections, regulators said.
- On Thursday, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency approved Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill, offering adults with obesity or related conditions a daily oral alternative to weekly injections.
- Data from the OASIS 4 clinical trial showed adults taking 25mg tablets lost an average of 17 per cent of body weight over 64 weeks, compared to 3 per cent for those on placebo.
- Patients with a Body Mass Index of 30 or above, or those with a BMI between 27 and 30 and related conditions, qualify for the prescription; current 2.4mg injection users can transition directly to daily tablets.
- Novo Nordisk expects the pill available through private providers within weeks, while The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has not yet assessed it for NHS use, though remains in active dialogue with the company.
- National Pharmacy Association Chair Olivier Picard warned of a 'growing black market for counterfeit weight loss treatments,' as the approval strengthens Novo Nordisk's first-to-market lead against rival Eli Lilly in the expanding obesity drug sector.
