Fire hits luxury hotel in French Alps, no injuries but scores evacuated

The fire started in the attic of Hotel des Grandes Alpes and led to evacuations of 270 guests and staff; 131 firefighters worked overnight to contain the blaze.

  • On Tuesday, a fire swept through the five-star Hotel des Grandes Alpes in Courchevel, starting in the attic at about 7pm and evacuating close to 100 people, officials said.
  • Authorities report the cause is still unknown and the Gendarmerie is probing the origin, while Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Viaud said the blaze spread rapidly to nearby buildings.
  • Reports noted more than 60 firefighters and 42 vehicles were tackling the blaze, while nearby Hotel Le Lana, with nearly 200 guests, was evacuated on Wednesday morning.
  • Authorities said evacuations proceeded calmly with no injuries reported, staff and guests took refuge in other hotels, and the fire remained active into Wednesday morning, belching thick smoke.
  • International agencies including Reuters covered the fire as safety measures face scrutiny after the Crans-Montana New Year's Eve blaze killed 40 and injured more than 100.
