Fire erupts during demolition of quake-damaged chimney at paper factory in Japan

Police said all 10 workers evacuated safely as firefighters battled the blaze for more than six hours and the cause remained unknown.

  • A fire erupted at the Nippon Paper Industries Yatsushiro City plant on Thursday during demolition of an earthquake-damaged 110-meter chimney. All 10 workers on-site evacuated safely with no injuries reported.
  • Three of the facility's five chimneys sustained significant damage when a magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28, causing an 80-meter chimney to collapse and kill nine employees.
  • Firefighters battled the blaze for six and a half hours using 14 engines. Footage on NHK national television showed an orange blaze with billowing black smoke rising from the damaged structure.
  • Nippon Paper Industries expects the fire will delay dismantling work originally scheduled for mid-September completion. The firm has not yet decided when demolition of the two remaining quake-hit chimneys will begin.
  • The magnitude-7.1 earthquake resulted in 38 deaths and widespread regional destruction across Kumamoto Prefecture. Some 36,000 houses and buildings were damaged, with more than 2,000 people still living in evacuation centers.
