Fire at Kelowna supportive housing building displaces residents
The blaze was contained to one unit, and heavy water damage spread through the second floor, officials said.
On Monday, Oct. 5, the Kelowna Fire Department responded to a fire at 1642 Commerce Avenue, where Hearthstone supportive housing is located, around 7:15 a.m.
Larry Watkinson, KFD deputy fire chief, said crews were called just after 7 a.m. after a fire alarm began ringing, with smoke and flames visible on the second floor.
Firefighters successfully contained the blaze to a single unit, rescuing occupants and assisting those unable to evacuate on their own with no injuries reported to crews or residents.
Heavy water damage occurred throughout the second floor, displacing residents as Kelowna RCMP and Fortis secured the scene and assisted with evacuation.
Commerce Avenue remains blocked at Enterprise Way and Jenkins Road while the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with Black Press Media seeking further information from KFD.
