Control Tactics, Abuse 'Rife' at Church Private School
Survivors said abuse was systemic and urged officials to treat the school and church as a coercive control group.
- Survivors of Redeemer Baptist School testified at a NSW parliamentary inquiry, alleging sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. Witnesses including Adam Gibson, Sam Gibson, and Alexandra Garth urged the government to investigate the school as a system of coercive control.
- NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner James Cockayne testified that students may have been victims of forced labour and servitude. An anonymous survey he conducted found about 40 per cent of respondents reported restricted movement, social isolation, threats and shaming.
- Former elder Glenn Frost alleged the school funnelled government funding into a property portfolio worth more than $140 million. Survivors testified children had "no one to report to," as all mandatory reporting issues were directed to principal and head elder Jonathan Cannon.
- Headmaster Russell Bailey stated the school "has never been in breach of its legal obligations" in its 45-year history. Redeemer has been invited to attend the next hearing on Friday.
- Former student Danny Nowlan described the school's teachings as "fire and brimstone on acid" with "extreme patriarchal control." He said the environment exhibited "building blocks of cult-like behaviour," with former principal Noel Cannon revered by teachers with "near deity attention.
