Fine Gael MEPs to support ban on alumina exports to Russia
The non-binding vote passed 460-136 and could push the European Commission to add alumina exports to its next sanctions package.
On Wednesday, the European Parliament passed a non-binding motion calling for a ban on alumina exports to Russia, with 460 MEPs voting in favour, 136 against, and 59 abstaining to pressure the European Commission.
Growing scrutiny stems from an Irish Times investigation revealing that Co Limerick's Aughinish Alumina, owned by Russian metals giant Rusal, exports raw material linked to Russia's military supply chain.
Fine Gael MEPs supported the motion, with Regina Doherty stating it is "not the time to send mixed messages," while Fianna Fáil MEPs abstained, citing the "blunt wording" of amendments.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed the Irish government is finalizing an investigation into the refinery's exports, promising to share findings with Brussels officials in weeks after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged swift action.
While the European Parliament lacks the power to unilaterally impose sanctions, the European Commission must now determine whether formal measures against the Limerick facility are warranted, balancing humanitarian concerns against European industrial reliance.
