Fincantieri Wins Design & Procurement Contract for Landing Ship Medium
The contract covers materials procurement and engineering for at least four ships and could start construction as early as Q4 2026, the company said.
- On Wednesday, the U.S. Navy awarded Fincantieri Marine Group a $30 million contract for materials procurement and engineering for the first four Medium Landing Ships, formally initiating the program's initial phase.
- Designed to transport marines, supplies, and equipment in contested coastal areas, the 'Landing Ship Medium' fills a critical capability gap for the U.S. Marine Corps operating in the Indo-Pacific.
- Fincantieri will deploy approximately 3,000 skilled U.S. workers on these initial four vessels, while the total program could eventually encompass up to 35 ships for the Navy.
- "This award signals a great start," CEO George Moutafis said, as the contract enables construction to begin as early as late 2026 through critical production-readiness activities.
- The Navy is adopting the Vessel Construction Manager model to separate design and construction oversight, reducing costs and change orders—a strategic shift following the cancellation of the Constellation-class frigate program.
