Thailand prepares to host IMF-World Bank meetings
Authorities expect participants’ spending to generate up to 2.25 billion baht as more than 15,000 delegates gather for talks on the world economy.
- Thailand will host the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok from October 12–18, bringing more than 15,000 participants from 191 countries to discuss global economic policy.
- To manage traffic congestion, Bangkok government offices will work from home on October 12, 14, and 15, while October 13 remains a public holiday and October 16 has been declared a special government and bank holiday.
- Security has been tightened at 21 official hotels and the meeting venue, with Tourist Police Bureau Commissioner Phongsiam Meekhanthong confirming 500 Tourist Police officers will coordinate with around 39 embassies through patrols, drones, and motorcade escorts.
- Visiting leaders include Swiss President Guy Parmelin, making Thailand's first official visit by a Swiss president in 22 years, and Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam; more than 320 electric vehicles will transport participants to reduce carbon emissions.
- The Thai Finance Ministry estimates participant spending could generate 1.05–2.25 billion baht for the economy, as the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration warned of heavy rain following flooding two weeks ago that brought 320 mm of precipitation.
