Gamescom 2026: FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE Hands-On Preview - HD-2D Vision
Square Enix’s preview highlights a turn-based system built from Brave Exvius, with Visions, stagger attacks and Limit Breaks shaping combat.
- Yesterday, Square Enix showcased a Final Fantasy Resonance demo at Gamescom 2026, featuring turn-based combat with the developer's signature HD-2D visual style blending retro sprites and 3D environments.
- Square Enix pioneered the HD-2D aesthetic with Octopath Traveler in 2018 to push visuals forward at a smaller cost than traditional AAA development. Resonance applies this style to revive traditional RPG mechanics.
- Players can employ Visions, equippable echoes of characters from across the Final Fantasy franchise, to provide statistical buffs and additional combat skills. Combat includes turn-based systems with "resonance" attacks triggered by staggering all enemies simultaneously.
- Adapting the story of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile game shut down in 2024, Resonance transforms mobile assets into a traditional console RPG. Navigation, dungeons, and summons have been entirely redesigned for the console experience.
- Resonance launches on every major platform on October 22, 2026. The demo featured a slice of Chapter 2, and it remains to be seen whether the title can fully transcend its mobile game origins as a standalone console experience.
