Deadly Nuclear Submarine HMS Swiftsure Being Dismantled in "Significant" Milestone
- The Defence Nuclear Enterprise completed the removal of the fin from the decommissioned submarine Swiftsure at Rosyth Dockyard in June 2025 as part of its dismantling project.
- This milestone follows a plan supported by public consultations since 2012 to develop a sustainable and responsible disposal method for decommissioned UK nuclear submarines.
- The project involves collaboration with Babcock, Defence Recycling and Disposals Team, and other contractors to recycle around 90% of Swiftsure's structure and materials, including over 500 tonnes of waste so far.
- Senior officials highlighted that Swiftsure serves as a demonstrator for a proven dismantling method that supports national security, environmental responsibility, and supplies materials for future submarines.
- The dismantling programme sustains 200 skilled jobs in Rosyth and contributes to Scotland’s vital role in UK defence while planning full decommissioning of Swiftsure by the end of 2026.
