Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhaal Charm Karlovy Vary to Kick Off Double Anniversary Edition
Hoffman said he felt honored and humbled as the festival opens its 60th edition with a tribute to his career and a screening of The Graduate.
- On Friday, the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival opened with honors for American actor Dustin Hoffman and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal. Hoffman received the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema, while Gyllenhaal accepted the President's Award.
- Visibly emotional at the Hotel Thermal, Hoffman told the capacity crowd he feels "very lucky" to have his life's work on screen. The soon-to-be-89-year-old recalled Robert Redford advising him decades ago: "You never think about a body of work while you're making movies."
- Gyllenhaal shared memories of her study abroad semester in Prague, crediting the experience with sparking her directorial ambitions. Referencing her latest film, The Bride, she concluded: "OK, this is me! This is what I like!"
- Following the ceremony, a 10-minute aerial display titled "Stars and Winners of Your Own Story" transformed the night sky. The spectacle featured 1,300 synchronized drones over the Czech spa town, replacing traditional fireworks.
- Hoffman will soon release his memoir, "Look at Me," providing insight into his life, family background, and creative pursuits. Simon & Schuster's Simon Six imprint will publish the book on Nov. 10.
