Woman who tried to murder toddler by giving her adult medication and posted TikToks during trial jailed
Laura Docherty gave a child unsuitable medication for a year, causing repeated hospital stays and leading to an order of lifelong restriction.
- On Monday, August 17, Laura Docherty, a 35-year-old from Glenrothes, was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh to an Order of Lifelong Restriction with a minimum of six years in prison for the attempted murder of a child.
- Between 2021 and 2023, Docherty repeatedly poisoned the two-year-old child with unprescribed adult drugs including Amitriptyline, Propranolol, and Dihydrocodeine, causing seizures, reduced consciousness, and cardiac events requiring hospitalization.
- Judge Michael O'Grady described her actions as "utterly reckless and breathtakingly wicked." During trial, Docherty posted TikTok videos from court, demonstrating what the judge called an "insatiable desire for attention."
- Speaking after sentencing, the victim's father stated he has "no sympathy" for Docherty, saying "she is where she is meant to be now" and describing the verdict as "a weight off my shoulders."
- Under the OLR, Docherty will not be automatically released after her minimum six-year term; any future freedom remains a matter for the Scottish Parole Board, with the judge noting she may never be released.
