One Dead After Wrong-Way Crash On I-290 In Northborough
State police said the wrong-way driver hit another vehicle and caused serious injuries, with at least one person hospitalized.
A wrong-way driver died in a fiery head-on collision on Interstate 290 in Northborough late Wednesday night after State Police received multiple 911 calls reporting the vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes shortly before 9 p.m.
The Northborough incident marks the latest in a series of wrong-way crashes across Massachusetts, following the death of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor last month in Lynnfield when responding to a wrong-way driver.
Firefighters battled flames engulfing a Subaru and a Jeep, using 2,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire. The Jeep driver survived with "non-life-threatening injuries," while Jeffrey Bowman, 27, of Southington, Connecticut, the wrong-way driver, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Massachusetts State Police and Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.'s office are investigating the fatality. Interstate 290 eastbound closed at Exit 24 for several hours; the highway reopened early Thursday morning after crews completed the investigation.
Governor Maura Healey recently unveiled a multi-year initiative to combat wrong-way driving, installing detection technology and updated signage at more than 500 high-risk locations statewide, including over 400 thermal detection camera systems.
