Fiery F2 Crash Causes Lengthy Stoppage at New Madrid F1 Track
The ART Grand Prix driver escaped unhurt after the car caught fire, and the red-flag stoppage lasted about 24 minutes, officials said.
- On Friday, Thai Formula Two driver Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak crashed at Turn 19 of the Madring circuit during free practice, escaping unhurt from the burning wreckage after his car spun into the barriers.
- Mercedes' George Russell told reporters the circuit is "arguably the most risky circuit of the whole calendar" because high-speed corners and close walls leave no margin for error.
- Recent testing at the circuit saw 19 red flags over two days, with 11 of those incidents resulting from crashes. DAMS driver Nicola Lacorte also crashed during practice, losing the rear at Turn 9.
- Marshals required around 24 minutes to clear the track following the fire, leaving only six minutes of practice remaining. It remains uncertain if Inthraphuvasak can return for qualifying sessions scheduled for Friday afternoon.
- Both Formula 2 and Formula 3 are scheduled to complete qualifying sessions on Friday afternoon, with Formula 3 facing two sessions as the event operates as a 'double feature' for the season finale.
