Lewis Hamilton Under Threat as FIA Launches Bahrain Grand Prix Investigation
The stewards said Hamilton moved onto the racing line at 80-85 km/h, forcing Bortoleto to brake from about 240 km/h.
On Friday, October 2, 2026, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton received a warning from FIA stewards after impeding Audi driver Gabriel Bortoleto during second practice at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.
A damaged right-hand mirror led Hamilton to block Bortoleto at Turn 9, where Scuderia Ferrari failed to provide radio warnings about the approaching Audi traveling at approximately 240 km/h.
Traveling slowly at approximately 80-85 km/h, Hamilton created a closing speed of approximately 155-160 km/h. Stewards determined he "unnecessarily impeded" the faster car by moving onto the racing line.
Following the investigation, Scuderia Ferrari was fined £10,000 for failing to provide appropriate radio warnings. Hamilton received only a warning despite the stewards' findings.
Hamilton, who faced similar scrutiny in Madrid and Baku, blamed 2026 engine regulations for recent blocking incidents. He argued "none of us drivers want to get in trouble" amid unclear out-lap guidelines.
