FG To Waive Data Costs For Students On Approved Education Platforms
The initiative will give five million students 100MB of free data daily for approved learning sites, officials said.
- On Thursday in Abuja, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa launched the Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content initiative, providing 5 million students with 100MB of free daily data from October 1, 2026.
- Introduced under President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, the initiative aims to bridge Nigeria's digital gap, with Alausa stating the program removes cost barriers so poverty and geography do not limit educational access.
- NCC Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida noted the daily allocation amounts to about 15 billion megabytes monthly, valued at an estimated N180 billion annually, supported by operators upgrading about 12,000 sites with approximately 70 per cent already completed.
- Alausa disclosed that the Learner Identification Number will track each student's educational journey, while the Nigeria Education Management Information System has geomapped more than 240,000 schools to support the rollout.
- Representing Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani, officials pledged continued support for digital inclusion as Alausa urged stakeholders to measure success by learning outcomes, not data consumption alone.
