Nigeria: NiDCOM Condemns Arrest of 42 Nigerians in Mozambique
NiDCOM calls for immediate release or formal charges for 42 Nigerians detained without explanation in Mozambique, highlighting alleged selective arrest and mistreatment.
- On Sunday, NiDCOM condemned the arrest of 42 Nigerians in Mozambique and called for their immediate release or proper charges, according to the commission. The statement was issued in Abuja and signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun.
- According to the commission's Sunday statement, the detained Nigerians were handpicked at a spare‑parts market in Mozambique and confirmed legal residents, with NiDCOM calling it a selective roundup.
- The commission said some detainees were allegedly beaten, had confiscated personal belongings, and several detainees reported sick and requiring medical attention.
- NiDCOM noted the Mozambique Attorney General's reported lack of known charges against the 42 detained Nigerians and demanded justice. Ms Dabiri-Erewa said, "Our citizens deserve to be treated with dignity and fairness wherever they are. I urge the Mozambican authorities to do the right thing and ensure justice is served."
- NiDCOM reiterated its call for fair treatment and respect for Nigerians living abroad and insisted suspected offenders be arraigned in Mozambican courts rather than detained without explanation.
