- The Federal Ministry of Works announced a full, two-week closure of the First Niger Bridge starting Monday, September 7, 2026, for emergency maintenance and repair works.
- Following an inspection last week, Minister of Works Dave Umahi identified critical vandalism on the bridge, including stolen bolts and iron rods that compromised structural integrity.
- Contractor Messrs SKECC will mill and remove deteriorated asphalt, lay approximately 40mm of new surfacing, and install solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras to deter future vandalism.
- Motorists are directed to use the Second Niger Bridge route through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State during the closure, with safety barriers and traffic personnel deployed.
- Emergency maintenance works are expected to conclude by September 21, 2026, with crews working day and night to expedite repairs and restore the bridge to safe condition.
