Rinus Israël, the captain of the Feyenoord team that won the European Cup I in 1970 by beating Celtic in the final, has died at the age of 83. The Amsterdammer became a legend of the Rotterdam club as 'Iron Rinus'. The tough centre-back, who formed a legendary duo with Theo 'The Tank' Laseroms, enjoyed great success with Feyenoord.
As captain of Feyenoord, the tough defender, also known as 'Iron Rinus', was the first Dutch footballer to lift the European Cup I.
A few weeks after Leo Beenhakker, another iconic figure of Dutch football has been taken from us, Rinus Israël. He celebrated golden times with Feyenoord, with whom he won the European Cup for National Champions in 1970. Israël was also part of the Golden Generation of Oranje, who lost the final of the World Cup in 1974.

Feyenoord icon and former Oranje international Rinus Israël has passed away at 83 years of age, his family has confirmed to ANP. Israël was known as a hard defender; he won the league title on three occasions with Feyenoord and also won the European Cup I in 1970. “IJzeren Rinus” also won the club World Cup and the UEFA Cup with the club in Rotterdam. He played 47 games for the Dutch national team.
