Ferguson first WA governor found in violation of ethics laws in over 30 years, state website shows
The agreement makes Ferguson the first Washington governor in more than 30 years found in violation of the state’s executive ethics law.
- On Friday, the Executive Ethics Board fined Governor Bob Ferguson $4,000 for violating state ethics laws after he admitted to allowing former Chief Strategy Officer Mike Webb to fly on a state plane to Tri-Cities last July.
- Ferguson is the first Washington governor in more than 30 years to face such enforcement action, with the board ruling he violated two provisions of the Public Service Act regarding state resources and securing privileges for a former aide.
- Under the agreement, Ferguson must pay the full fine, though half is suspended if he avoids further ethics violations for two years. Ferguson admitted the mistake and pledged it would not happen again.
- Rep. Jim Walsh, chairman of the Washington State Republican Party, alleged Ferguson has been "cutting corners on ethical behavior" throughout his career, calling the incident a clear example of bending ethics rules in private.
- The complaint emerged after Mike Webb resigned in March 2025 amid allegations of creating a hostile work environment. Neither Webb nor the Washington State Democratic Party responded to requests for comment before the board finalized the agreement.
