Portugal registered 292 cases of FGM in 2025, the highest value of the last decade. DGS guarantees that the increase does not mean higher prevalence of practice.
In 2025, 292 cases were registered in the SUS (Brazilian public health system), 15% more than the previous year, but none were performed in Portugal. Most of the women were under nine years old when they underwent this practice.
According to DGS, this evolution "reflects the increasing awareness and training of health professionals" for the identification and registration of these situations, not necessarily meaning an increase in this practice."
Health Directorate-General warns that the number of cases increased from 254 to 292, from 2024 to 2025. This is a record well above the 60 recorded in 2017, the lowest number in the last decade
The number of female genital mutilation (FGM) records in Portugal increased 15% in 2025, to a total of 292, announced today the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), which attributed this growth to the increased awareness of health professionals.
